Please enjoy your holiday break, but at the same time, this is a great opportunity to improve your grade.  Test Corrections, Extra Credit, and Late Work are all available.  You can find the Final test review on the Unit 6 Social Psychology Page.  Remember, this test is worth about 20% of your grade.

As we approach the end of the semester . . .

Please remember that we will be taking a comprehensive final that will cover everything we have learned throughout the semester.  Also, if you presently not passing the class or if you would like to improve your present grade, you can still turn in test corrections, do extra credit and late work.  Your last chance to turn all that in will be when you get back from Christmas Break.  Please come see me or email me if you have individual questions.

Unit 3 Test on Monday!

Monday will be a short day because it is a Monday and we will be holding the Veteran's Assembly.  In addition, I will not be in class on Thursday to review what is due on the day of the test, so I am writing this post to help make Monday a little less stressful.  Please go to the Unit 4 Motivation, Emotion, & Personality page for an up to date list on what is due on Monday.  Please email or text me if you have any questions before Monday.

End of 1st Term & New Material Loaded on Unit 4 Page

As you may already know, I have to have your grades completed by Thursday.  I will have them done by then.  Thank you for your patience.  I have uploaded several video clips and all of your assignments so far from Unit 4 onto the Unit 4 page.

It's been a rough two weeks!

To the students and parents out there who check their grades and this blog on a regular basis I apologize that this blog and the grades have not been updated as quickly or as often as they should.  I have been battling a cold for two weeks that resulted in me missing three days of school.  In the midst of all that my mother in law passed away which resulted in me missing another two days of school.  I am working to get back on top of the grades and hope to have everything up to date by the end of Fall Break.  Please don't hesitate to call or email me if you have specific questions.

Life after Parent Teacher's Conference

I have attached the instructions on how to do test corrections on the "Classroom Documents" page.  You can earn back half of the points you missed.  Test corrections are by the end of the term.  I will also accept 2 late assignments or 1 late assignment and 1 late project per term.  Come see me if you have any questions about your grades.

Conducting Scientific Research

I realize that we are a little behind, so I have attached the power point that we are going to use for our discussion on Scientific Research, both here and on the Intro Unit page.  Please review it and come to class on Tuesday with Step 1 completed.  There are three slides worth of possible questions that might help you come up with a question of your own.

Amendments to the Disclosure Documents have been posted!

If you will go to the Class Documents page, you can view a copy of the amendments we made to our disclosure document.  You are now ready to review them with your parents and sign the parent letter.  Be ready for the quiz tomorrow on the Modern/Contemporary perspectives of Psychology.

Extra Credit on Quiz #1

If you are reading this, you followed my suggestion to check out the blog before class.  Be sure to read the following "Welcome Post" dated August 21st.  There will be three questions on the quiz about what the letters from your personality test mean or represent.  There will also be two bonus questions, here are the answers.  Write them word for word.

The answer to bonus #1 is:  Bring you 1/2 inch 3 ring binder with you to class every day.

The answer to bonus #2 is:  Taking notes will help me get an A on all my quizzes.

Welcome to Intro Psych and Unit 1

I hope you are excited for this class, after all it is an elective and you don't have to take it, if you don't want to.  I hope that this blog will be of help to you throughout the semester, please check it often.  The pages on the right side of the screen will be of the most help to you.  While you can find files there from last year's units, I will be updating the files as we go.  Feel free to look ahead, but know that by the time we get to that unit, I may have modified some of the assignments.  The Unit 1 Plan (you can find this on the "Unit 1 Introduction" page) has been updated and is correct.  The individual assignments for Unit 1 however, have not been updated yet.  You can aslo find a copy of our disclosure document and your parent consent letter on the "Class Documents" page.

Gender and Adolescent Development Unit

If you have been gone the past two days you missed out on an emotionally charged debate on which Gender is better than the other.

We have taken one quiz, see the Unit plan on the Gender & Ad Dev Unit Page (Look for the link on the right side of the screen.  You can turn in notes on your reading to make up for the quiz.

We will be working on your Adolescent Development paper in class, you can finish it up at home and be ready to turn it in the day of the test.  The instructions are the last page of the Unit plan.

Remember to bring a children's book with you to class on Day 4.

Unit 4- Day 1&2

During this unit, we will be going over stress and health, therapy, and psychological disorders. 

Day 1 was devoted to the different types of stress we feel and the different stressors we have. The students also chose which psychological disorder they wanted to do their research paper on. We also started watching the movie Tuesdays with Morrie and identified the different stresses that are presented in the film.

On Day 2 we continued talking about stress and ways we cope with the different stressors we have.

Unit 2- Day 6

We learned about three other types of altered consciousness- meditation, biofeedback, and hypnosis. We then discussed dreams and interpreted our dreams using various dream journals!

Unit 2- Day 5

Today we learned about the "fight or flight" reflex in regards to lying and how to tell when others are lying to us. We broke off into groups and read through the police interview with OJ Simpson and detected the various deception methods he used.

Unit 2- Day 4

We went over consciousness and sleep & dreams today! Remember to be recording dreams for our interpretation exercise in two class periods (25th/26th).

Today we learned all about NEURONS- aren't they exciting?! If you missed today, you may want to come talk to me individually so we can go over a few things- a lot of the information I gave is not in your book. The PowerPoint is below as well as the notes from that day!

Unit 2- Biology

We just started Unit 2 on how biological processes effect our behavior. I gave out all of our unit assignments- they are attached below and also under the Unit 2 tab to the right. We also did a meditation demonstration- I hope it was fun and helpful! Remember to practice that for 8 days in a row! We'll do another demonstration again soon to make sure everyone understands how it's supposed to be done.

Day 9- Feb 6/7

Today was Test Day! 

We'll grade the test next class and go over some of the questions. Here is the video I showed during 3rd period if you want to finish watching it. Next unit should be interesting!

Day 8

Today we discussed how to analyze the results of your research observations/surveys and what to put in the conclusion (remember: it's going to show a CORRELATION, not a cause and effect). We also reviewed for your Unit 1 test that will be given next class!

Day 7

Today we went over ethics, finished talking about surveys, and went through the process of creating an experiment. Your hypothesis should be set and you should start doing observations or surveys THIS WEEKEND! If you still need ideas, think about common things you observe everyday or common sayings that could be tested i.e. blonds have more fun, men like long hair more than short hair, women tend to be friendlier to men than to other women. These can all be tested and would be interesting to study!

Day 6- Jan 29/30

On Day 6 we went through the steps of how to create a good hypothesis. We also discussed the two different options you have for how to test your hypothesis: observations and surveys.

Day 5- Jan 25/28

Today we discussed the steps of the scientific method and worked on Parts 2-4 of your paper. The paper will be due Feb 7/8 and it needs to be at least two pages long. Please read the instructions on the paper carefully- it will answer a lot of your questions.

I also gave you the instructions for your next project! You will be conducting your own scientific research on a human behavior. The instructions on the project are under the Unit 1 tab to the right. If you have questions, come talk to me or send me an email!

A few reminders:

If you did NOT turn in Part One of your "Why I'm Taking Psychology" paper, bring it next class. I will start deducting points after next time.

The Unit 1 Plan is slightly mixed up- all the homework (reading in the textbook) needs to be pushed up a day. So please read pg. 18-21 for next class (NOT pg. 4-11).

Please remember to bring back your signed Parent Permission Form next class!
